On August 17 of 2004 I posted my last blog post to what was known as “Steve’s Online Journal.” Honestly, to call it a “blog” feels kind of funny. I had never even heard the term until about halfway through the lifespan of the site in 2002. I wasn’t using any type of platform. I was editing individual pages in Netscape Composer and archiving them at the end of each month. Very stone age internet stuff. Still, I was more or less consistently updating the site with brief updates across four years beginning in early September of 2001.
Yes, this means some of the earliest content saw me addressing 9/11 in real time. But the site ended up being much more than just my perspective on world events and personal milestones. It became a repository for a bevy of half-assed ideas I had. Comics, DIY CD compilations, fake letter writing campaigns, oddball found objects and much more. I even briefly livestreamed a radio show on the site.
I was reminiscing about the old SOJ (as we called it back in the day) earlier today and felt like it was time to wade back in. I mean who ISN’T starting a new blog in 2025? I miss being able to think of little stupid projects, crank them out and have a destination to share. Sure, I have all of the social media accounts, but… this is just… different.
I don’t know. We’ll see where this goes. No longer Steve’s Online Journal. No longer SOJ. Now, It’s Attack of the 50 ft. Chicken Wing. And consider this my “hello world.”
